On Thursday, February 6, 2025, Mr. Hudu Hussein, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kumi, officially launched a project to rehabilitate 11.14 kilometers of Community Access Roads in Ongino Sub County, alongside other district leaders. The initiative, funded by the government at the cost of UgX 1,007,426,151, will focus on two key areas: the Amuria-Atirir road (6.76 km) and the Akolitorom-Zagazaga-Totolim road (4.8 km), spanning the sub-counties of Ongino and Kanapa.  Mr. Hudu Hussein praised local leadership for addressing community service needs and securing central government funding. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to providing essential services such as roads, education, and healthcare, and urged the community to utilize these resources effectively to support President Museveni’s economic transformation goals. He emphasized the importance of the contractor delivering high-quality work within the contracted timeframe and warned against substandard practices. During the launch, Mr. Orone Justine, the Acting District Engineer, provided details on the project's scope of work. This will include site preparation, earthworks, drainage improvements, graveling, and completion tasks. The contract is expected to last eight months, and the work has been awarded to Greystone Investments Ltd. In addition to road rehabilitation, the contractor is required to open and maintain a community-owned garden of at least one acre, dedicated to oilseed varieties of their choice. They will also undertake tree planting activities, specifically using Grevillea and other approved species along both sides of the road, enhancing environmental restoration efforts.   David Ogira, the LC III Chairperson for Kanapa Sub County, expressed gratitude to the government for addressing the urgent need for road repairs. He highlighted the road's deterioration during the rainy season, which had hindered community access to primary schools. Mr. Ogira expressed optimism about the project's positive impact and called on the community to support the contractor throughout the process. Additionally, this road rehabilitation project aligns with the National Oil Seed Project, which began in 2021 across 81 districts in Uganda. Its goal is to accelerate the commercialization of key oilseed value chains in order to improve livelihoods and resilience for smallholders involved in oilseed production and marketing.
