Kumi farmers receives 23 bulls under OWC
Farmers in Kumi district are in jubilant mood after Operation Wealth Creation provided support of improved 23 boran crosses breed. The support comes in an attempt to improve the breeds of cattle in the district by having the breed of animals that grow faster and put on weight faster to provide more meat as highlighted by Dr. Harriet Nakanwagi, the District Veterinary Officer. Dr Nakanwagi also revealed that each bull costed government 2,800, 000= giving the total cost of 63,400, 000= only. Ahamada Washaki, Kumi Resident District Commissioner, raised a concern on how the beneficiaries we selected and questioned their capacity to take care of the bulls citing negligence which is common in most of the farmers. Dr. Nakanwagi however informed the gathering that farmers who had experience and were keeping 30 cattle and above were considered, their ability to take care of the animals was assessed and their will to pass on the first two bull calves to other beneficiaries within a period of three years was considered. Mr. Washaki appealed to the beneficiaries to be committed in kicking poverty out of their families by embracing the interventions of government towards poverty eradication. He added that the improved breed of the bulls is part of the commitment by government of President Museveni to add value to cattle in teso so as to get high quality beef. He commended Operation Wealth Creation for fulfilling the promise made to the people of Kumi. Nelson Elungat Lakol thanked government for the bulls and noted that it was the right move for the people of Kumi citing a Phrase in ateso “Abara” meanibg wealth which comes from the word “Ibaren” meaning cattle. He appealed to the beneficiaries to adhere to the guidance on how to manage the improved bulls so that they serve the purpose to which they are intended.
