Government to support 19 Women’s groups with funds worth UGX 73,573,000

The government through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has committed GX 73, 573, 000 UWEP funds as financial support to women groups in the sub counties of Kamacha, Kanyum, Tisai, Kanyum Town Council, and Mukongoro Town Council in Financial year 2024/25. This was revealed during the validation exercise to assess and verify groups that are supposed to benefit. According to Ms. Teddy Agwang, the UWEP focal person at the district, the money is meant to support the women to boost their incomes and improve on their livelihoods and family welfare by investing in the enterprises they selected or small business. Agwang advised the women against spending the money directly once they receive but rather use it for the enterprises, like sorghum/groundnuts, rear sheep/goats/cattle, shops or retail trade, and the SACCOs. She added that the money is a loan meant to be used within a period of three years; payable with an interest of 5% per year but is interest free if paid back within one year.Agwang added that validation of the members to verify and ensure; membership is confirmed, Certificates are renewed, enterprises are confirmed, to verify whether Group Accounts are still active was key to ensure that money is paid to the right people. She also added that the money is only targeting those who have not benefited from other programs like PDM. Grace Atiang, the Chairperson of Kumi district Women’s Council appreciated the government for championing the empowerment of women in all aspects, she noted that financial empowerment had brought stability in the households since the women are also supporting with basic needs. She added that proceeds from UWEP enterprises had enabled the women to support their families with school fees, feeding, dressing and medication. She urged her members to use money well, pay so as to attract more funding.
