The Ministry of Water and Environment has conducted training for selected officers from all districts in the Teso sub-region on the Water Environment Management Information System (WEMIS). This training took place on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the Kumi District Council.  Simon Peter Omalinga, a representative from the Ministry of Water and Environment, informed the attendees that the Ministry, through the Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfer (UGIFT) program, had contracted a consultancy group composed of M/S MFI Document Solutions Ltd and RSI Softech India Private Limited (JV) to design, develop, deploy, and maintain an online Integrated Water and Environment Management Information System (WEMIS) at the sub-county, district, and regional levels in Uganda. Omalinga explained that this new system aims to address issues related to the current paper-based data collection and management processes. The training is intended to equip the technical team with the skills needed to use the system effectively.  He also mentioned that each district would receive equipment in the form of desktops and tablets to aid in data collection. Fred Malinga, representing the Chief Administrative Officer of Kumi, expressed gratitude to the Ministry for this initiative. He noted that data is the backbone of government planning and that accuracy is critical for effective service delivery. Malinga urged the trainees to engage fully in the training and acquire the necessary skills for field use. He cautioned them against misusing the equipment, emphasizing that it should be utilized for its intended purpose.  Nelson Elungat, the Political Head of Kumi, encouraged the trainees to embrace the transition from analog to digital technologies, which is an inevitable global trend. He also requested that the Ministry of Water and Environment address ongoing challenges related to water coverage in the region. The new digital data management system will facilitate the collection of information on water sources, both new and existing, as well as sanitation facilities, forestry, and environmental data.
